Even or Odd
Learn how to determine whether an integer is even or odd using the modulo operator and understand the logic behind this basic DSA problem.
On this page
Even or Odd in DSA
Determining whether a number is even or odd is a simple DSA problem that helps build understanding of conditions, modulo arithmetic, and basic number processing.
Even and Odd Numbers
An integer is even if it is completely divisible by 2.
Examples:
2, 4, 6, 8, 10
An integer is odd if it is not completely divisible by 2.
Examples:
1, 3, 5, 7, 9
Using the Modulo Operator
In C, the % operator returns the remainder after division.
For any integer n:
n % 2 == 0 → Even
n % 2 != 0 → Odd
Example
int n = 14;
if (n % 2 == 0)
printf("Even");
else
printf("Odd");
Output:
Even
Algorithm
To check whether a number is even or odd:
- Take an integer
n. - Calculate
n % 2. - If the remainder is
0, the number is even. - Otherwise, the number is odd.
Pseudocode
START
Read n
IF n % 2 == 0
Print "Even"
ELSE
Print "Odd"
END
Handling Negative Numbers
The same logic works for negative integers.
For example:
-8 % 2 = 0 → Even
-7 % 2 ≠ 0 → Odd
So the sign of the number does not change whether it is even or odd.
Complexity
The algorithm performs one modulo operation and one comparison.
Time Complexity: O(1)
Space Complexity: O(1)
The complexity remains constant regardless of the size of the integer.
Common Mistakes
Checking Division Instead of Remainder
The important operation is:
n % 2
not:
n / 2
Forgetting the Equality Check
Use:
n % 2 == 0
to check for an even number.
Assuming Zero Is Odd
0 is an even number because:
0 % 2 = 0
Quick Reference
if (n % 2 == 0)
printf("Even");
else
printf("Odd");
Key Takeaways
- An even number is divisible by
2with remainder0. - An odd number has a non-zero remainder when divided by
2. - The modulo operator
%is the standard way to solve this problem. - The solution takes
O(1)time andO(1)space. - The same logic works for positive, negative, and zero values.
Practice Questions
- Check whether a given number is even or odd.
- Print all even numbers from
1toN. - Print all odd numbers from
1toN. - Count the even and odd numbers in an array.
- Find the sum of all even numbers in an array.
