Sum of Natural Numbers

The sum of natural numbers means adding all natural numbers from 1 to a given number N.

For example, if:

N = 5

then:

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 = 15

This is a basic DSA problem that helps practice loops, mathematical formulas, and time complexity.

Using a Loop

We can calculate the sum by adding each number from 1 to N.

int n = 5;
int sum = 0;

for (int i = 1; i <= n; i++) {
    sum += i;
}

printf("%d", sum);

Output:

15

Algorithm

  1. Set sum = 0.
  2. Start from 1.
  3. Add each number to sum.
  4. Continue until N.
  5. Return or print sum.

Using the Mathematical Formula

The sum of the first N natural numbers is:

sum = N × (N + 1) / 2

For N = 5:

5 × 6 / 2 = 15

In C:

int n = 5;
int sum = n * (n + 1) / 2;

printf("%d", sum);

This approach does not require a loop.

Loop vs Formula

Approach Time Extra Space
Loop O(N) O(1)
Formula O(1) O(1)

The formula is more efficient when only the sum is required because it calculates the result directly.

Important Edge Case

If:

N = 0

then:

sum = 0

For the problem to represent natural numbers from 1 to N, N should normally be non-negative.

Common Mistakes

Starting From 0

For the first N natural numbers, the usual sequence is:

1, 2, 3, ..., N

Incorrect Formula

The correct formula is:

N × (N + 1) / 2

Integer Overflow

For very large N, the result may exceed the range of an int. In such cases, use a larger integer type such as long long in C.

long long sum = 1LL * n * (n + 1) / 2;

Quick Reference

Loop

int sum = 0;

for (int i = 1; i <= n; i++)
    sum += i;

Formula

long long sum = 1LL * n * (n + 1) / 2;

Key Takeaways

  • The sum of the first N natural numbers is 1 + 2 + ... + N.
  • A loop provides a straightforward iterative solution.
  • The formula N × (N + 1) / 2 calculates the result in O(1) time.
  • Use an appropriate integer type when N can be large.

Practice Questions

  1. Find the sum of the first N natural numbers using a loop.
  2. Find the sum using the mathematical formula.
  3. Find the sum of natural numbers between two given values.
  4. Find the sum of even numbers from 1 to N.
  5. Find the sum of odd numbers from 1 to N.

What's Next?

Next, practice sum of digits to apply loops and arithmetic operations to a number.
