Hollow Rectangle
Learn how to print a hollow rectangle pattern by printing characters only on its boundary using nested loops and conditions.
On this page
Hollow Rectangle Pattern
A hollow rectangle is a pattern where characters are printed only along the boundary, while the inside remains empty.
For 4 rows and 6 columns:
******
* *
* *
******
This problem helps develop understanding of nested loops and boundary conditions.
Pattern Logic
A position belongs to the boundary when it is:
- In the first row
- In the last row
- In the first column
- In the last column
All other positions should contain a space.
For a rectangle with R rows and C columns:
Boundary:
row == 1
row == R
column == 1
column == C
C Program
#include <stdio.h>
int main() {
int rows = 4;
int columns = 6;
for (int i = 1; i <= rows; i++) {
for (int j = 1; j <= columns; j++) {
if (i == 1 || i == rows ||
j == 1 || j == columns) {
printf("*");
} else {
printf(" ");
}
}
printf("\n");
}
return 0;
}
Output:
******
* *
* *
******
How It Works
The outer loop controls the rows:
for (int i = 1; i <= rows; i++)
The inner loop controls the columns:
for (int j = 1; j <= columns; j++)
For every position, the condition checks whether it is on the boundary:
if (i == 1 || i == rows ||
j == 1 || j == columns)
If it is a boundary position, print *. Otherwise, print a space.
Algorithm
- Read the number of rows and columns.
- Traverse every row.
- Traverse every column.
- Check whether the current position is on the boundary.
- Print
*for boundary positions. - Print a space for inner positions.
- Move to the next row.
Pseudocode
FOR each row
FOR each column
IF first row OR last row OR first column OR last column
PRINT "*"
ELSE
PRINT " "
PRINT new line
Complexity
Every position in the rectangle is visited once.
For R rows and C columns:
Time Complexity: O(R × C)
Space Complexity: O(1)
Common Mistakes
Filling the Inside
Printing * for every position creates a solid rectangle, not a hollow one.
Missing a Boundary
Make sure all four boundaries are checked:
Top
Bottom
Left
Right
Forgetting Spaces
For inner positions, print a space:
printf(" ");
Otherwise, the rectangle will not appear hollow.
Quick Reference
if (i == 1 || i == rows ||
j == 1 || j == columns) {
printf("*");
} else {
printf(" ");
}
The main idea is:
Boundary → *
Inside → space
Key Takeaways
- A hollow rectangle contains characters only on its boundary.
- Nested loops visit every row and column.
- Boundary conditions determine whether to print
*or a space. - The approach takes
O(R × C)time andO(1)extra space.
Practice Questions
- Print a hollow rectangle of
5 × 7. - Print a hollow rectangle using
#. - Print a hollow square.
- Print a hollow rectangle with user-provided dimensions.
- Print a hollow rectangle with a different character on each boundary.
